Black and White Film Street Photography

Street of London 120 film

When I had time, I walked London with a Hasselblad, a roll of film, and a light meter in my bag. At night I developed the film and sat quietly with the photographs I had taken. What you see here is a set of black-and-white images made mostly in West London during that period.

When I had time, I would put my Hasselblad, a roll of film, and a light meter into my bag and head out into the streets of London. I rarely chose a destination. Sometimes, as you keep walking, the place you need seems to come to you instead. I walked around West London on my own, regardless of the season or the weather.

When I got home, I developed the film at night. Working with my hands in the dark bag, I traced the light and shadow I had seen during the day once more. After the film had dried, I cut it, placed it in the scanner, and faced the images I had made. It was less like staring them down than sitting in silence, each of us waiting to see what the other would do.

The photographs gathered here were taken mostly in West London around that time. For me, they are less a record of the city than small clues that bring back the way I breathed then, and the pace of my steps.
